“I seek to imbue my paintings with an internal light. It is not a representation of light, but the sensation of a radiance emanating from within the painting itself.”
Primarily interested in the creation of a sense of light, color, depth, and feeling, James Lumsden builds work through multiple translucent layers. Layer upon layer, glaze upon mark upon glaze, concealing and revealing through a rhythmic process of action and reaction until a distinct luminosity emerges from within.
In recent years, drawing has established itself as a central pillar of Lumsden’s practice, exploring open-ended, experimental, and improvisational mark-making using graphite and colored pencil. Much like his paintings, these drawings are constructed through repeated layering, rubbing, blending, and erasing to explore mark, gesture, weight, balance, and density.
During his 2027 residency at La Maison de Simon, Lumsden will develop a new body of drawings across various scales, utilizing a daily practice as a visual diary. His subtle abstract investigations will respond intuitively to the atmosphere and the surroundings.
